What it is

Mile High Mahjong (Mile High Mahj) is a Denver, Colorado American Mahjong organizer that hosts open-play sessions, guided play, beginner lessons, and city-wide meetups. It is not Japanese Riichi. Founder Kim Ruvolo’s first-party About page says she started the group because it was hard to find games in Denver, and that Mile High Mahj now runs open plays, a league, and private and group lessons. The homepage says the project brings together the Denver and Colorado community to learn, play, and compete in American Mahjong.

Who it’s for

Anyone in the Denver / Colorado Front Range area who wants American Mahjong open play or lessons. Homepage open-play copy: “All levels welcome, but you must know how to play.” Beginner “Learn to Mahj” and guided-play sessions are separate booked listings on the same Events page. Distinct from Japanese Riichi tables (for example Secular Hub / Denver Riichi meetups), which are not this listing.

Why it’s listed

This is a first-party organizer site with a live Events calendar and dated 2026 open-play bookings, not a scraped directory card. As of 2026-08-27 it is the clearest American Mahjong open-play calendar in Denver with named venues and printed prices.

  • Homepage and Events page both list dated open plays for September 2026, including 9/8 @ 5:30 p.m. at Olive & Finch Cherry Creek ($12), 9/11 @ 11:30 a.m. at Briar Patch ($12), and 9/22 @ 6 p.m. “Mahj on the Mezz” at Cholon Sloan’s Lake ($12). Open-play blurbs: “All levels welcome, but you must know how to play.”
  • Same Events page also lists paid guided play and a 9/12 @ 1:00 p.m. “Learn to Mahj” beginner lesson ($80).
  • About page names founder Kim Ruvolo and frames Mile High Mahj as Denver / Colorado community open play, league, meetups, and lessons.
  • Events page also prints a “Weekly Meetups” grid of civic / friend tables (rec centers, Field Library, Denver JCC “Mahj Play at the J”). Site copy above that grid: “Some events are run by Mile High Mahj, others by our equally fabulous Mahj-obsessed friends.” Treat those weekly lines as community pointers on their site, not as Mile High Mahj’s own door unless the dated booking says so.

Hours and venues above are what the official pages showed on the check date. They can change. Use the Events / Book Now listing before treating any date as fixed.

Notes

  • American Mahjong. Homepage says “American Mahjong.” The pages checked do not say NMJL or National Mah Jongg League by name. Not Riichi. Not Chinese / Hong Kong style as the default game.
  • Open play is ticketed on the Events page at $12 for the September dates listed above. Guided play was $40; “Learn to Mahj” beginner lesson $80. Do not invent other prices.
  • Events page: if an event is full, “please join the waitlist by emailing hello@milehighmahj.com. We may add another table!”
  • Weekly Meetups grid (Clements Center Lakewood, Highland Rec, Platt Park, Montclair, Central Park, Field Library, Denver JCC) is printed on the Events page as community drop-ins; the same page says some are friends’ events. Confirm with that venue or the WhatsApp note on the page before treating a rec-center line as a Mile High Mahj ticketed table.
  • Not affiliated with Mahjong Plaza.

FAQ

Q: Is this Japanese Riichi?
A: No. The homepage says Mile High Mahjong is for American Mahjong. It is a Denver organizer for open play, lessons, and meetups, not a Riichi club.

Q: When and where do they play?
A: Rotating Denver venues named on https://www.milehighmahj.com/events. On 2026-08-27 that page listed open play on 2026-09-08 (Olive & Finch Cherry Creek, 5:30 p.m.), 2026-09-11 (Briar Patch, 11:30 a.m.), and 2026-09-22 (Cholon Sloan’s Lake, 6:00 p.m.), each $12. Street addresses are not printed on that page — check the Book Now card for the date you want.

Q: Do I have to know how to play, and what does it cost?
A: Open-play copy says all levels are welcome but you must know how to play. Events page open plays were $12 on the check date. Beginner “Learn to Mahj” and guided-play sessions are separate paid listings on the same page ($80 and $40 on 2026-08-27). Email hello@milehighmahj.com for a waitlist if a table is full.
