What it is
Riichi Advanced is an open-source, four-player browser mahjong client that its developers call “infinitely extensible.” Despite the name, it is not Riichi-only. On the check date its ruleset menu listed 30 named rulesets plus a Custom option, including American (NMJL), Riichi and Sanma, Hong Kong Old Style, Sichuan Bloody, MCR, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Singaporean, Zung Jung and several regional Chinese styles. Groups can open a private room and invite friends, or fill seats with AI players. Each ruleset has optional “mods,” and a scripting language (MahjongScript) lets groups write their own house rules. It is social table software, not mahjong solitaire.
Who it’s for
Home groups that play more than one style, or want to try one they’ve never played, in the same online room. That includes American players who want to practice with the NMJL card or alternative cards, Southeast Asian players (Vietnamese, Malaysian, Singaporean), Riichi players who like house variants, and groups with unusual house rules that they can script. Existing home-game clients on disk are single-family or a few rulesets (Mahjong Soul, Tenhou, Riichi City, BGA Riichi, RiichiMahjong.com, Mahjong Place, Mahjong Spot, Table Mahjong, Mahjong.Live, OpenMahj, 4 Winds, NMJL Online, etc.). None is open source, and none offers user-written rulesets.
Why it’s listed
The plaza needs a new home-game client that differs in kind from recent picks: Wednesday’s BGA Riichi (turn-based tables on a multi-game platform), Tuesday’s Mahjong.Live (Indian Heritage), Monday’s Mahjong Place (Taiwan/HK/MCR/Sichuan) and Friday’s RiichiMahjong.com. Riichi Advanced is the plaza’s first open-source client, with the widest ruleset menu on disk and an American (NMJL) mode that supports several alternative cards.

HTTP note: riichiadvanced.com sends an incomplete TLS certificate chain (Let’s Encrypt leaf only). Box curl therefore failed certificate verification (HTTP 000) with or without a browser user agent. With certificate checks skipped it returned 200, and a standard web fetch also loaded the page. Browsers normally complete the chain on their own. Not stated on the pages checked: price, ads, account requirements, and the operator’s legal name (development is credited to the GitHub repository and a community Discord). The README warns that bugs are likely. Agree on ruleset, card and mods with your group before starting.

Notes
- Four-player table mahjong in many rulesets, not solitaire. Don’t confuse it with Side games portals.
- Open source (AGPL-3.0), with a fast release pace (v1.5.0–v1.5.2 within two weeks in Aug–Sep 2026). Features and rules can change between versions.
- The name says “Riichi,” but the American (NMJL), Hong Kong, MCR, Vietnamese, Malaysian and Singaporean modes make it relevant well beyond Riichi players.
- Not affiliated with Mahjong Plaza.
