What it is

Ooh La Mahj is a free American Mah Jongg game that runs in a web browser and as an iPhone/iPad app. You can play solo against three bots, or start a private table, share its link, and have friends join from their own devices, with bots filling empty seats. It plays the full American game (the Charleston, jokers, calls and a card of winning hands), and the site says it is “not tile-matching solitaire, Hong Kong mahjong, or Japanese Riichi.” Players choose between the 2026 hands and the developer’s original “Ooh La card.” It is an online home-game table, not a shop or a club.

Who it’s for

American Mah Jongg groups that want to keep their weekly game going when people can’t meet, including Android and laptop users. Beginners can use the hints and six short lessons.

Why it’s listed

The plaza’s home-games bucket needs a free, no-download American table with private rooms. The developer’s own pages state the features, price and terms.

  • Two ways to play (official play page, 200 on 2026-10-12): solo against three bots at your own pace, with optional hints; or a friends table where you share a link and friends “tap it, enter a name, and join from their own device,” with bots filling empty seats.
  • Group features: voice and chat at private tables; schedule the next game, poll the group for a time, or make a weekly Standing Table; set house rules. The App Store text adds bot levels (“breezy, club or shark”) and calendar reminders.
  • Card: choose the 2026 hands or the original Ooh La card. At a private table everyone plays the host’s chosen card. The site says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by the National Mah Jongg League.
  • Price: the play page says it is currently free in the browser and on iPhone/iPad. The Terms (v1.1, Aug 29, 2026) say: “There is no purchase, subscription, in-app purchase, virtual currency, or paid tier of any kind,” and there is no gambling. Players must be 13 or older.
  • No account needed: you can start solo without signing up. The Privacy page (effective Sep 4, 2026) says that after your first few hands the game asks for an email address so your hands can follow you between devices, and that finished-hand contents are not kept.
  • App Store (200): “Ooh La Mahj – American Mah Jongg Practice,” free, category Board, rated 4+, developer Ooh La Games LLC, 5.0 from 6 ratings at check.
  • Learning extras: a Charleston rules-and-practice page with a printable cheat sheet, and a glossary.

  • Small rating base: 6 App Store ratings at check.
  • The App Store page says “Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.”
