What it is
mahj.events is a web app for organizing American mahjong games at home and at larger events. A host creates a game, shares one RSVP link, and manages seats, a sub list and a waitlist; the app can assign tables and keep the group in sync. It also includes a hand tracker for logging winning hands against the 2026 NMJL card. It was built by Michael Dodd of Austin, Texas, after watching his wife juggle group texts, spreadsheets and Venmo requests for several weekly games.
Who it’s for
People who host a weekly or one-off American mahjong game and are tired of group-text RSVPs, plus players who want to track which card hands they have made this season.
Why it’s listed
It is a first-party tool for running a home game, not a game itself. Its home page and About page describe the host features in plain terms.
- Hosting: unlimited free events and group members; one invite link; guests can RSVP without an account; waitlist and sub list; automatic table assignments; a “Game Day Needs” list to coordinate what to bring.
- Hand tracker: log winning hands against the current NMJL card and see what you haven’t hit yet.
- Price: the Mahj Free plan covers casual players, weekly groups and home games. Paid events carry a 5% platform fee. A Pro plan for instructors, clubs and tournament directors is listed as “Coming soon.”
- Beyond home games: teacher storefronts with booking, a verified host directory to hire for events, and tournament tools for directors.

Notes
- Home games listing: a hosting tool, not a place to play. Games are still played with your own tiles, racks and card.
- American mahjong only: the product is built around four-player tables, subs and the NMJL card; it does not target riichi or Hong Kong play.
- NMJL card: the site says the hand tracker uses the 2026 NMJL card. It does not say how that card is licensed.
- Paid events: the 5% fee applies only to events that collect payment through the platform.
- Marketplace and directory: the site also has a Discover directory and a hire-a-host marketplace; those were not reviewed here.
- Pro tier not live: the Pro plan is shown as coming soon; features listed there may change.
- Founder: the About page names the founder as Michael, and the home page testimonial names him as Michael Dodd.
