What it is

Playboard American Mahjong is a free, first-party browser table for four-player American-style Mahjong on playboard.gg. It includes the Charleston, jokers, calling, and a shared hand card. You can play solo against three bots, use Quick Match, or open a private playroom and send friends a link. It is social table software, not a mahjong-solitaire tile-matching puzzle. It also does not use the copyrighted NMJL card: Playboard publishes its own original hand card.

Who it’s for

Home players who want a no-signup browser table to practice American-style flow (Charleston, calling, joker swaps) with friends or bots. It fills a gap next to the American online tables already on disk (I Love Mahj, Mahjongg4Fun, Mahjong 4 Friends, Mahj Parlour, HeyMahjong Multiplayer, Eight Bam, Bam Good Time, Mahjong Time, etc.) and the Chinese/Riichi servers (PlayMahjong.io, Mahjong Soul, Tenhou, Riichi City).

Why it’s listed

The plaza needs an unused multiplayer home-game slot with a real first-party URL and rules copy it can cite.

  • Mahjong guide (https://playboard.gg/en/mahjong) returned 200 on 2026-09-25 under “Play American Mahjong Online Free | Rules & Strategy.” Definition on the page: “American Mahjong is a four-player tile game where you race to build one particular hand — not any winning hand, but one of the patterns printed on the hand card that everyone plays from.” The guide sections are Objective, The Tiles (152-tile set with 8 flowers and 8 jokers), The Hand Card, The Charleston, Your Turn, Calling Tiles, Jokers, Declaring Mahjong, and Scoring and Strategy.
  • The same page’s FAQ says: “On Playboard you can play solo against three bots, or fill a table with friends in a private room or Quick Match,” and “No, you can play American Mahjong instantly as a guest.”
  • The guide flags where it departs from NMJL: Playboard allows jokers in runs (the NMJL card does not), and its courtesy-pass handling differs.
  • Play launcher (https://playboard.gg/en/mahjong/play) returned 200. Three entry points: Play solo (against the bot), Quick match (find an opponent online), and Create playroom (invite friends with a link).
  • Hand card page (https://playboard.gg/en/mahjong-hand-card) returned 200. It says: “The card real American Mahjong players use is published annually by the National Mah Jongg League and is copyrighted, so Playboard’s is an original design: 46 hands, 72 ways to win, nine categories.” Patterns score 25–75 points, and most add 5 for a concealed finish.
  • Platform FAQ (https://playboard.gg/en/faq) returned 200. It says all games, Playrooms, Quick Match, and solo play are completely free, no account is needed, and it runs in any modern desktop or mobile browser. Footer on the platform pages: © 2025–2026 Playboard.

The platform FAQ describes Playrooms generically as 1v1, while the Mahjong page says you can fill a four-seat table with friends. Confirm seat count in a live room before you plan a four-friend game night. Features and rules can change.

Notes

  • Home games / social multiplayer (American-style table Mahjong with bots, Quick Match, and private playrooms). Not mahjong solitaire.
  • Uses Playboard’s own original hand card, not the NMJL card. Don’t describe it as “play with the 2026 NMJL card.”
  • Playboard is a multi-game site (19 games). This listing covers only its Mahjong product pages.
  • First-party playboard.gg product. Not Amazon and not a MahjongFinder scrape.
  • Not affiliated with Mahjong Plaza.

FAQ

Q: Can I play American-style Mahjong with friends here for free?
A: Yes. On 2026-09-25 the Mahjong page offered solo play against three bots, Quick Match, and private playrooms shared by link. The platform FAQ said every mode is free and no account is required.

Q: Does it use the official NMJL card?
A: No. The hand card page says the NMJL card is copyrighted, so Playboard uses its own original card (46 hands, 72 ways to win, nine categories). The rhythm is familiar, but the hands differ from your NMJL card.

Q: Is this mahjong solitaire?
A: No. The guide describes four-player table play with the Charleston, calling discards, jokers, and declaring Mahjong. It is not single-player tile matching.
