What it is
The National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) is the organization that publishes the official American Mah Jongg hands-and-rules card each year. It does not run a public club directory and it is not a tile shop. Tables that play “standard American” are playing the League’s card.
Who it’s for
Anyone who plays American (NMJL) Mah Jongg — home games, rec-center tables, college open play, and parlors that require a current card.
Why it’s listed
This is the card authority, not another lifestyle brand. A directory that covers American home games has to point here first.
- Founded in 1937 in New York City to standardize American hands and rules. The League’s own page says it started with 32 members and “today numbers over 350,000.”
- On 2026-08-23 the homepage said the League is “celebrating 89 years of Mah Jongg” and was selling the 2026 card.
- The store listed these 2026 card sizes (USD, as shown that day): Standard 5 1/8” × 4” at $14; Large Print 6 1/8” × 4 3/4” at $15; Mega Card (three panels, 8.5” × 11”) at $35, “Mailed in Late March.”
- The same store also sells Mah Jongg Made Easy Revised Edition 2024 ($15.95), NMJL Online ($4.99 / 1 month, $12.99 / 3 months, $49.99 / 1 year), plus racks, pushers, tiles, and a table cover. The homepage points to an iPhone/iPad app for NMJL Online.
- League functions listed on-site: publish American rules, issue the annual card, answer questions and arbitrate disputes, sell merchandise, and donate to charities. The homepage also flags food-insecurity work.
Prices above are what the official store showed on the check date. They can change.

FAQ
Q: Is the National Mah Jongg League the same as Chinese or Japanese (Riichi) mahjong?
A: No. The League publishes the American Mah Jongg card. It is not a Chinese, Riichi, or solitaire rules body.
Q: Where do I buy the 2026 NMJL card?
A: From the official site, nationalmahjonggleague.org. On 2026-08-23 the store listed a Standard card at $14, Large Print at $15, and a Mega Card at $35.
Q: Does the League help me find a local table?
A: No. It issues the card, answers rules questions, and sells merchandise. It is not a club directory.
