What it is

Mountain Mahj is a first-party American Mahjong lesson program in Crozet / Charlottesville, Virginia: priced Mahjong 101 beginner classes, Mahjong 201 strategy follow-ons, a packaged Welcome to Mahjong Bundle, plus secondary open-play tables, a monthly Social Club, and a fall league waitlist. Partner venues across the Charlottesville area; private at-home lessons by inquiry. It is not Japanese Riichi, not Chinese-family table mahjong, not the National Mah Jongg League, and not a 4-player public game server.

Who it’s for

Beginners and brush-up players in Crozet, Charlottesville, Waynesboro, Staunton, and the Shenandoah Valley who want a structured in-person American Mahjong path (101 → open play → 201), plus returning players seeking coached open play or league. Distinct from national virtual schools already on Plaza and from JCC-only drop-in calendars.

Why it’s listed

This is a named US instructor brand with its own school site, printed 2026 class dates and dollar prices, NMJL-card equipment on the rental page, and first-party Classes / store event-detail pages — not a Facebook-only teacher and not a brand already on disk (not Lara, Molly, Mrs Mahj, Master Your Mahjong, Mahj Over Matter, MKE Mahjong, Bon Mahj, School of American, AMJA, NMJL, Mahj Life, Atlanta Mentors, Mahj Mind, or Oh My Mahjong as primary).

Notes

• American Mahjong / NMJL. Rentals list NMJL Playing Cards with the lesson/open-play path; do not list as Riichi or Chinese-family teaching. Homepage lesson copy does not always spell “American,” but the NMJL-card rental kit and Charlottesville American-table context match Plaza Learning American entries.
• Primary listing is instructor / school (priced 101 / 201 curriculum + Welcome Bundle + dated fall 2026 calendar). Open play, Social Club, league, and set rentals are secondary, not the reason this is categorized Learning.
• Oh My Mahjong appears as tile/mat gear on the rental page only — credential or product brand, not this listing’s parent company.
• Do not invent a named founder or a private 1:1 hourly rate; Contact is inquiry-only for private bookings.
• Not affiliated with Mahjong Plaza.

FAQ

Q: Is this Japanese Riichi or Chinese mahjong lessons?
A: No. Mountain Mahj’s rental kit prints National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) playing cards with American-style Oh My Mahjong sets, and the Classes path is 101 beginner lessons into open play and 201 strategy — the American / NMJL table common around Charlottesville, not Riichi or Chinese-family scoring.

Q: What does a lesson cost, and when are the next beginner seats?
A: On 2026-09-14, Mahjong 101 store pages were $65 for 2.5 hours; open play was typically $30 (some Boars Head open-play SKUs $25); Mahjong 201 was $55; the Welcome Bundle (2×101 + 2× open play + 1×201) was $215. Classes hub listed multiple Sep–Oct 2026 101 dates starting Tue Sep 15. Confirm live Classes and store pages before treating a seat or rate as fixed.

Q: Where are lessons held, and do I need my own tiles?
A: Public 101/201 and open play rotate among printed partner venues in the Charlottesville area (Dairy Market, Virginia Wine Collective, Boars Head, Virginia GuestHouse, King Family Vineyards, Mt Ida Reserve, and similar). Private lessons can come to your home via the Contact form. Site lesson framing is instructor-hosted play at those venues; set rentals are a separate SKU if you want tiles at home — do not assume every public class requires your own set.
