What it is

Four Friends Mahjong is a small online shop that designs and sells its own American (and Chinese) mahjong tile sets, solid walnut racks and pushers, mats, bags and a teaching guide. Its About page says it grew out of a group of friends who learned from a teacher named Alice, and that the founder, “an architect by training,” made prototype tiles, bags and racks for their own game nights before selling them. Its giving page says 10% of proceeds from each tile line go to a named national or regional charity: Cat Lady Rose supports the Humane Society of the US, Architectural Navy supports Habitat for Humanity and Free Spirit Teal supports Pledge to Humanity. Its tagline is “Have fun. Do good.” It is an equipment shop, not a club or a class.

Who it’s for

American mahjong players who want a designer 160-tile set or warm-wood racks instead of plastic, and buyers who like a purchase tied to a stated charity. Teachers may also want the shop’s own teaching book.
